1997-05 Sample Form Letter on Habeas Corpus

As members of National Convocation of Jail and Prison Ministry, we are seriously concerned about the present efforts to erode the right of access to post conviction Habeas Corpus. This limitation is particularly disturbing in the cases of those sentenced to the death penalty.

Our membership strongly believes that post conviction Habeas Corpus is essential to insure equal access to due process. Efforts to limit that process make post conviction Habeas Corpus inaccessible. When the claim to equal justice is coupled with restrictions that make access impossible for ordinary people, the claim becomes a sham.

Therefore, we want you to join us in opposing any effort to further erode the right to post conviction Habeas Corpus and also to join us in efforts to restore those rights that have already been lost.
