1997-06 Letter for Azikiwe Kambule

May 21, 1997

District Attorney John Kitchens
Madison County District Attorney
c/o Prison Ministries Committee
216 N. Azalia Drive
Wiggins, MS 39577

Dear Mr. Kitchens,

The 17th Annual Convocation of jail and Prison Ministry met in Canton, MS on May 10-14, 1997. We are aware of the capital case against Azi Kambule.

As members of the National Convocation of Jail and prison Ministry, we express our outrage at the killing of any human being by individuals or -judicial systems; especially the killing of our children.

The International- Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, which the US ratified, condemns the execution of offenders for crimes committed before the age of 18.

We oppose the practice of any juvenile under the age of 18 being tried in adult court and/or housed in an adult institution. We remain adamantly opposed to the death penalty with a particular concern for those who commit crimes while a juvenile.

We strongly implore you to reconsider your action to seek the death penalty against Azi Kambule.

Sincerely,

Sister M. Jeroma Day, BVM

On behalf of
Members of the National Convocation
Of Jail and Prison Ministry
