2006-01 Joint Statement of the Convocation and the American Catholic Correctional Chaplains Association on the Treatment of Illegal Immigrants

The National Convocation of Jail and Prison Ministry and the American Catholic Correctional Chaplains Association, meeting jointly in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, oppose the use of incarceration as a tool for the control and elimination of illegal immigration. Such detention, when it is open-ended and lacking the legal protections we claim for ourselves, is especially harmful to those whose only crime is the seeking of better lives for themselves and their families. It is a tactic contrary to the compassionate Gospel of Jesus Christ and offensive to the merciful God of all peoples. As such, therefore, it is unworthy of the United States of America. Members of the Convocation and the ACCCA urge our government and all fellow citizens to seek alternative solutions that are both just and respectful of human dignity.
