In 1979, the Convocation was initially sponsored by the National Federation of Priests’ Councils. Since then it has developed into an independent, ecumenically based movement that meets yearly in host cities around the country. Prior to the Convocation’s existence, there was probably no forum where volunteer correctional ministers and institutional correctional chaplains could so freely address the injustices inherent in the criminal justice system and propose the kind of Restorative Justice initiatives that are expressed in our Mission Statement. The Convocation ran it’s course and was dissolved in 2015 at a Washington D.C. meeting.
